The Power of the Ask – Friday Fix

by | Oct 28, 2011 | Industry News & Trends

One thing experts suggest to job candidates is that if after the interview they want the job, they should ask for it. The same goes for member referrals. If a member is telling you how much they enjoy your community, event, programs, etc., don’t just thank them. Ask them to share that information with their friends and colleagues. If you have a member-referral incentive going on be sure to tell them as well.

When you’ve been given a compliment, use it as a way to open up discussion not shut it down. Saying thank you is the first step, asking for word-of-mouth referrals is a great second. If you don’t feel that the referral suggestion is appropriate at that moment use the time to engage the member in further conversation such as asking “What specifically did you like about this event compared to our others?” Not only does it continue the conversation, it turns the focus on the member’s experience and let’s them know you value their opinion.
