7 Ways to Be Irresistibly Attractive to Your Members

December 27th, 2012 | Posted in Membership Management

I was inspired by a recent post on the Marc and Angel Hack Life blog on becoming irresistibly attractive. This post isn’t a Cosmo magazine fluff piece about pouty smiles and the like. It focuses on attracting people in the sense of being more enjoyable to be around. The ideas presented work very well for member-based organizations as well. I’ve listed some of the concepts below with an application to member-based organizations.

1. Do the right thing. No matter what your mission doing what’s right, not necessarily what’s popular, will help attract members. One of the most popular reasons to join an association, chamber or nonprofit is knowing that there is an organization larger than you that has your professional, local or heart’s concerns protected. Making It Just RightThe cantankerous genius, the intellectual with the emotional capacity of a two-year old, Hollywood employs the stereotype frequently in characters such as House (from the show of the same name) and Sheldon in the Big Bang Theory. They are difficult, at best, but we forgive their foibles because of their impressive intellect.  While many of us striving for knowledge may have a higher patience level for those with a condescending attitude and big brains,  social media has leveled the playing field and made this same kind of intellectual superiority hard to stomach. Five Tips to Rock Membership from Moose

May 15th, 2012 | Posted in Membership Management

The following is a guest post from Lynda Baldwin at Communication Strategies Group, Inc., an award-winning communications firm based in Chicago, Illinois.

Moose?  Who’s heard of Moose?  Well, as it turns out, quite a few people have.  In fact, 1.1 million men and women are currently members.  But like many other membership-based organizations, the Moose often finds itself riding through the peaks and valleys of member recruitment.   Generally, its membership drive relies on existing members sticking around year after year and reaching out to recruit their friends to join, too.

While this has proven effective on a grassroots basis, it’s not necessarily the most effective membership-recruitment approach at the macro level.

Enter Heard of Moose? (www.heardofmoose.org) This pilot public education campaign is the first of its kind for the Moose, and it was no small task.  It incorporates paid advertising in the Tampa market – encompassing buses, bus shelters, billboards, online and newspapers – public relations; social media AND grassroots marketing. And while there may not be a magic bullet for effective recruitment outreach, we’ve identified a few commonalities that you might want to consider before launching your next campaign.      Read the rest of this entry »

The Number One Thing You Must Do Before They’ll Love You

April 24th, 2012 | Posted in Social Media and Business Trends

I recently attended a job fair and asked a job hunter if he thought about joining an association in his chosen industry to help him find a job and network since he was new to Florida. “I have.” His answer surprised me but we continued talking about what YourMembership.com does and our involvement with associations, membership management and online community. When I asked him what association he had joined or what his experience had been thus far he said, “Well, I found a group on LinkedIn. It was 25 people and I thought that sounded about right.”

To him a LinkedIn group and an association are the same thing. There have been a lot of blog posts on associations and their fight for relevancy recently. “Remaining relevant” is a complex issue. It’s more than just making sure your offerings are in tune with what your members want and need. It’s also a matter of “educating” the less experienced on 1. what an association is 2. the importance/value of association memberships. Here’s an interesting post from a twenty-something entering the workforce.  Read the rest of this entry »
